Why it's important to stay hydrated
You've heard that drinking water and staying hydrated is important for good health. But do you know why it's important? Simply stated, our bodies need water to function correctly. Each cell in your body relies on water to to do what it's meant to do such as maintaining body temperature, lubricating joints and getting rid of waste. We loose fluids every day in many ways so everyday we have to replace that loss.
Although plain water is the ideal, you can also infuse your water with certain foods. By using a hint of fruit and herbs, you can add refreshing flavors with little calories and no artificial flavors or sugar.
Did you know?
Water makes up half of your body weight.
How we lose water
We lose water and fluids everyday through sweat, when we go to the bathroom, and even through our breathing. When the weather is hot or when we work out, we lose water more quickly.
Signs of dehydration
You can prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of water everyday. Some signs of dehydration include:
- Dry mouth
- Sleepiness or fatigue
- Extreme thirst
- Little or no urine, or darker than usual urine
- Headache
How much water is enough
You'll hear different opinions on this. Most advise 6-8 8-ounce glasses of water everyday. For some this is enough, while others require more. For example, athletes or those who exercise everyday need to replace their fluids more often and drink more than 8 glasses each day.
How to stay hydrated
- Carry water using a reusable water bottle
- Drink water before, during and after a workout
- Drink water when dining out
- Set a schedule when you drink water to help you remember. For example, have a glass when you wake up, before you eat, or at the beginning of each hour.
