Here’s how to keep more money in your wallets by choosing generic and mail-order for your medications.
What are generic medications?
Generics have the same quality, strength, purity, and stability as their brand-name counterparts, but cost much less. An example of an over-the-counter pain reliever is where you might find generic Ibuprofen rather than a brand name such as Motrin or Advil.
So, the next time you need a new prescription, be sure to ask your doctor if a less expensive generic drug is available to you. The only difference may be in the packaging, or color and shape of the pill.
How can I save on mail-order medications?
For prescriptions you take regularly, which are often called maintenance medications, WHA members can save time and money by signing up for mail orders through OptumRx.
Often, prescriptions are delivered to your home in a pouch and shipped at no cost with standard delivery (usually within 3 days). To get started on the mail order of your maintenance medications, simply sign in to your MyWHA account, and select Pharmacy Services. And, you won’t have to make as many trips to the pharmacy!
Take these tips
If you have been prescribed medication, be sure you take it as directed on the prescription bottle/packaging. If you have questions, talk to the pharmacist so you clearly understand how best to take your medication. That might include taking it on an empty stomach or at night, as it may cause drowsiness. For older adults, there may be added concerns, so always check with your doctor before taking a new over-the-counter medication (read more here from the FDA).
